Halifax, Nova Scotia: Part 1

Wow!  Canada, here we are!
Lovely passport pics.  Ode to high school.

Thanks, dad for the heads up on the slang!  Within the first hour or so, we sure had to adjust to some…
"Canada"

The car goes 220! (kilometers/hour.)
It is 11 degrees outside! (Celsius.)
Gas is only $1.38!!! (per liter.)
How aboot that, eh?

Our very first night in Halifax and we were excited to walk around downtown and were sent by our wonderfully sweet front desk friend to a delicious restaurant: Five Fisherman.  Of course the first meal had to consist of delicious and fresh seafood chowder followed by spicy halibut fish tacos!  Yum. We went for our first of many strolls along the harborwalk, and were surprised at how cold and foggy it got so quickly!  But it was still awesome.  What a great place!

Thursday Sam had to run some work errands in the morning and we were able to grab lunch together before he was off to clinics.  We ate at Bicycle Thief.  It was charming, delicious, and we had an awesome view from the patio.

That night we wanted to check out the beach!  Exciting!  But during the 30 minute drive from Halifax to Dartmouth, the sky went from sunny to foggy, cold and windy.  We didn't get anywhere near the water, didn't stay for long, and immediately went for ice cream.  Didn't make sense to us either, but it was delicious and maybe we'll try the beach again on a sunnier day :) What's with the fog anyway?

What's that you say?  The bridge is eerily disappearing into nowhere?  Oh yes, welcome to Halifax.

Friday was our 2 year Anniversary!  We celebrated year 1 in Orlando, FL & were really excited that the 2 year mark was here! To celebrate, we had dinner at Brooklyn Warehouse,
Halifax's number 1 rated restaurant.  We approve of the rating.  They don't have a consistent menu, rather one that changes EVERY DAY and is updated on chalkboards throughout the restaurant.
You never know what they will be making.  It was awesome.

A first for us at this restaurant: Sam & I BOTH tried oysters!  Slurp.
Our waiter even gave us Brooklyn Warehouse t-shirts for trying new things!
I have a feeling they aren't going to lose their spot at Numéro Un.
Yummy dessert
And no fog tonight!  Just kidding, it rained as soon as we left the restaurant.

The weekend was wonderful!  And the weather has been nothing but sunny!
Saturday we went where I had been dying to go:
the Halifax Citadel
Halifax, "city by the sea", simply wouldn't exist the way that it does without the Citadel.  The Citadel (fortress) is a national historic site that is positioned on top of a huge hill that overlooks the entire city and harbor.  The British military founded the town at this location in 1749, built a guardhouse on top of the hill and homes at the base near the water.  Over the years, the fort and town both grew and Halifax at the time was dedicated to supplying the soldiers with supplies.  The star shape is typical of 19th century forts built by British military and allowed soldiers every angle of defense.
We came on the perfect weekend: D-Day anniversary.  And although the Citadel always has re-enactment actors, there were some extras this weekend including a rifle demonstration and a concert!

View of downtown.. I can only imagine how it used to look
Solitary Confinement cells, YIKES

 Concert!
The Clock Tower

Afterward, we walked down to the far end of the boardwalk and explored the huge farmer's market!
This place was hoppin' on the Saturday afternoon!  We saw all sorts of street performers:
singing, dancing, bagpipe-ing.  I could get used to sunny Halifax :)

Finally, we had an awesome Italian dinner at Ristorante aMano.  Great start to the trip and so far, Halifax is a winner!
Oh, Canada.
